The program strives to create and maintain an awareness of the opportunities that exist in Local Government and assist in addressing skills shortages.

Each year, four eligible students will be awarded $2,500 each and an opportunity to undertake paid work experience alongside professional Council staff during their University breaks.

The objectives of this program are to:

  • Assistant Council to address areas identified as posing a skills shortage

  • Encourage the development of relationships between Council and Secondary institutions with students enrolled from within the Wyong Shire

  • Create awareness of local government as a career opportunity
Provide students with financial support during their first year of university studies, including paid work experience.

  • As well as the financial assistance, students will be assigned mentors to support and guide them during their work experience.

Success story
Allan O’Connell was a recipient of the scholarship in 2008. He has now completed over 12 months full-time study at university undertaking Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering/Surveying.

Here is what Allan had to say on the benefits of this program:

“One of the great things about receiving this scholarship from council is that unlike my peers I have the opportunity to attend university on a full-time basis to complete my degree while always having paid work experience in my chosen field during the semester breaks.

"As a university student the paid work has made my life much easier by assisting me financially and it has also allowed me to experience various aspects of engineering from a number of areas in council such as Water and Waste, Roads and Drainage, Contracts and Special Projects and Open Space and Recreation.

"One of the things that I enjoyed during my work experience was working for the Investigation and Design Section. In this section I was involved in undertaking preliminary investigations to determine an appropriate design for the relocation of water mains. These designs were then used to produce design plans to carry out the works.

"While working in the Investigation and Design Section, I gained invaluable experience designing and producing technical plans which will give me a major advantage over my peers in my civil engineering field.

"As a recipient of a scholarship from Wyong Shire Council I feel privileged as I have received invaluable assistance that cannot be experienced elsewhere. Working in local government is the perfect opportunity to get a head start in your career.”
