Student
scholarship scheme Wyong Shire Council's scholarship
program to help local secondary school students is
away to a good start with the initial awards going
to two
students from Gorokan High School.
Allan O’Connell and Grady O’Neill
will both receive $2,500 and an opportunity
to work alongside professional council staff during
university
breaks.
Allan is studying engineering, while
Grady is a computer science student.
As well as the financial assistance, projects will
be assigned to students and appropriate mentors selected
to support and guide thjem at Wyong Shire Council. The target areas for the 2008 scholarship year were;
IT, Engineering, Town Planning/Environmental Health
and Teaching (Early Childhood).
Helping overcome skills shortages The
scholarships will be offered again for 2009 and will
also include Finance.
Outlining the program, the council's Manager of Workplace
Strategies, Lyn Wheeler, said the idea was to help Higher
School Certificate students who qualified for university
admission and were studying in areas where skills shortages
had been identified in local government and the community
in general. This also provides eligible students an opportunity
to gain practical experience in their chosen field of
study.
