Olympics at the libraries

You don’t need to go to Beijing to see the Olympics. Visit Wyong Council libraries these school holidays for the mini Olympics.

The libraries will offer a range of fun activities for children and teenagers, including craft workshops, playwright workshops, mini Olympics and creative writing workshops.
The activities will held at different locations from Monday, 7 July until Saturday, 19 July.

Bookings are essential for all workshops and can be made by phoning the appropriate library.

Road safety days
Children can learn bicycle skills and safety these school holidays at two Community and Road Education Scheme (CARES) open days.

The free open days will be held at The Central Coast Lifetime Learning Centre, Palmdale on Tuesday, 15 July and Wednesday, 16 July and are suitable for children aged eight to14.

Police officers teach children safety skills on a purpose built road environment training track which features a roundabout, traffic lights and other ‘real life’ road characteristics.

All bicycles and helmets are provided and a BBQ lunch will be supplied each day. Spaces are limited and bookings close Monday, 7 July. Phone Council’s Road Safety Officer on 4360 5232 to book.

Community art project
The Lakelands Community Art Project was recently unveiled at Lakeland Community Centre, Kanwal.

The project was completed by community members including people from Kanwal Family Centre, Kanwal Play Group, Kanwal Primary School and Kanwal Bridge Club under the direction of Council’s Community Artist, Margrete Erling.

The art features seven mosaic tiled blocks depicting images which represent the local community.

Wyong Deputy Mayor, Ron Stevens attended the event which included the unveiling of a memorial bench to remember local Kanwal family services supporter, Marie Lang.

Marie was a committed advocate for the families that she came into contact with while working at Kanwal Family Support Service and a supporter of many local community projects.

Key Issues with Councillor Doug Eaton
For the last four years the building of a new performing arts centre in Wyong town has been Council's number one priority.

The centre is envisaged to be something similar to Laycock St Theatre in Gosford.
Such a facility is desperately needed by our local drama groups, dance troupes and the like.

Despite engaging consultants, reviewing sites and preparing plans nothing was getting built.
At a cost of well over $30 million and in the absence of funding from other sources it seemed unaffordable.

Recently it looks more hopeful and I was able to get $700,000 put into the 08/09 budget to advance the project. Recent research has provided examples of centres being built for under
$10 million and although we will still need assistance from other levels of government, this is more affordable.

Hopefully I can report work starting sometime next year.

Sandy’s Enviro tip of the week
Reduce your carbon footprint by replacing incandescent globes with energy efficient globes. A 20-watt energy efficient compact fluorescent light provides as much light as a 100-watt incandescent bulb.
