Safety campaign with a simple message
‘ It’s as easy as counting to three’.
That’s the message Council wants to get to Wyong
shire’s motorists to help cut the road toll.
Concerned that many drivers are travelling too close
to the vehicle in front, Council has been staging a
promotion known as the ‘Three Second Gap’ campaign.
The aim is to convince motorists to leave a three
second gap between vehicles on dry roads and five seconds
in the wet. Drivers are being urged to measure this
safety gap by watching the vehicle in front pass a
landmark such
as a tree or guidepost – and ensuring that they
can count “1001, 1002,1003” before their
own vehicle passes the same spot.
Allowing less than a three second gap between traffic
is against the law and carries a penalty of $300 and
three demerit points.
To draw attention to the problem,
Council has joined its counterparts in the Hunter
Region in carrying out a public awareness program.
