Project update: Rehabilitating
Tumbi Creek
Work is continuing to restore Tumbi Creek and improve
the water quality of the Tuggerah Lakes.
As part of the Estuary Management Plan (EMP), about
15 kilometres of streambank will be rehabilitated.
Council recently installed hardwood log structures
known as ‘timber jacks’ to deflect fast
flowing water away from the eroding streambank, allowing
the slower flowing water to deposit sediment behind
the timber jacks.
“Over time, the sediment deposits will be stabilised
with vegetation behind the timber jack,” Estuary
Management Ecologist, Vanessa McCann said.
“This will stop the banks from eroding and ultimately
helps to revitalise the ecosystem of the creek.”
Other works planned to rehabilitate Tumbi Creek include
installing a footbridge over a drainage channel, removing
weeds and revegetating part of the creek bank.
The
work is co-funded by the Community Water Grants program
and the EMP. The Federal Government’s
Caring for Our Country program will contribute
$20 million to the EMP during its four year implementation.
