Best way to start your assignment for school

Compiled by the Youth & Children’s Services Librarian, Wyong Shire Library & Information Service
May 2006.
When starting an assignment for school, here are some things to think about –
- Questions to ask yourself
- How well do I understand the assignment question?
- If in any doubt, try to write it out in your own words
- What do I already know about the subject?
- Once you have written down what you know, then it becomes easier to decide what you will need to look for
- Have you talked about the research topic in class or is it something new?
Helpful hint No 1.
Try to start your assignment as soon as you get it, you will have more time to get the information you need. |
- For a visit to the library
There are some essential things that must come to the library with you like
- Your assignment question
- It is great to have this just in case you have difficulty explaining just what it is you are looking for
- Your library card
- Having your card will make it easier and quicker too get the books you need
- Change for the photocopier
- Helpful just in case the only information left is in the Reference section
You are now ready to do your research –
- you know what information you have to have
- you have brought what is needed to best use the library
now...
Just remember that the library staff are happy to help you with your assignment, they will need the following clues from you –
- When is the assignment is due
- It will help staff know when your project is due so there is enough time to get books from other branches if needed
- How much detail you need
- It helps to know how much information you will need to write eg a couple of paragraphs or a number of pages
- How will the assignment be presented
- Assignments come in many forms now – essay, poster, project book, or spoken report to name a few. Each style needs different sorts of information, library staff will help you find the right one.
Now it will just be a case of selecting the best books for your assignment and taking them home!
Good luck!
Helpful hint No 2.
Try to come in to the library yourself as much as possible, rather than send someone else from your family. You know what your teacher wants, and we can help you find the information for the topic. |
