Little
Coast Kids centres awarded new books
Two Wyong Shire Council Care and Education centres
have been nominated to receive new books as part of
a literary program.
Tom
Stone and Spotted
Gum Care and Education centres
have been nominated by the Mingara - Literacy Foundation
to be the beneficiary of books as part of the 2008
Literacy Program.
The focus of the program for this year is on pre-school
aged and special needs children, with a theme of Helping
kids fall in love with reading.
Tom Stone at Berkeley Vale and Spotted Gum at Killarney
Vale will each receive a library of books to the value
of $2,250.
Staff and children at Tom Stone will be given the
books at a special presentation at the centre on Wednesday
30 April from 2pm. A presentation will be held at Spotted
Gum, which is located off Thomas Mitchell Road, Killarney
Vale, on Wednesday, 21 May from 11am.
Central Coast Mariners players will be special guests
at the presentations.,
Children’s Services Coordinator, Beth Jones,
said staff and children at the centres are thrilled
at the thought of have a whole new library of books.
“Reading aloud to children is a very important
and successful tool in getting children to be interested
in reading and learning at a young age.
“The children love to be read new and exciting
stories and see colourful illustrations.
“It is always costly to have new books to read
to the children. So it is fantastic for each centre
to be receiving a library worth over $2000 – this
equates to about 346 books per centre,” said
Ms Jones.
The Literacy Foundation, a partnership between Mingara
Recreation Club and Dymocks
bookstores was launched
in 2006 and in 2007 focused on providing books to primary
schools on the Central Coast.
Media representatives, photographers and the local
community members are invited to attend both presentations
at Tom Stone Care and Education Centre, Bundilla Parade,
Berkeley Vale and Spotted Gum Care and Education Centre,
Thomas Mitchell Road, Killarney Vale.
