Welcome
to new citizens will be highlight of Australia Day
More than 200 Wyong Shire
residents became Australian Citizens in 2005 - and
41 more have chosen to take the step as part of Australia
Day celebrations.
A majority of new citizens to Wyong Shire over the
past year originated in the United Kingdom, with others
from various countries including the Philippines, South
Africa, the USA and China.
The Australia Day citizenship ceremony will be held
at Wyong Race Course at 10am on January 26, with Mayor
Bob Graham welcoming the new Australians. See what

Final touches are being added to Australia
Day celebrations (PDF File - 15 KB) across Wyong
Shire, with events to be held at several
locations
on Wednesday
25 and
Thursday 26 January.
“Australia Day is a way of saying out loud that
we are proud to be Australian - so a lot of time, energy
and money is being put in to making sure the day is
a success,” Council’s John Hardwick, who
is helping coordinate the events, said.
“Several town centres throughout the Shire will
be hosting entertainment, food, stalls and fireworks
displays.”
Mayor Graham, who will attend celebrations in Wyong,
The Entrance and Canton Beach, says Australia Day is
an important event on the community calendar.
“Australia Day is an opportunity for us to celebrate
our land, our diversity, and our indigenous cultures,” Mayor
Graham said.
Australia Day Ambassador Diana Fisher, known as a
high flyer on the Sydney social set and for her roles
on ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and as a writer
for several Australian publications, will also attend
and speak at several local Australia Day celebrations.
“Australia Day will be particularly special
for those residents who formalise their commitment
to Australia by becoming Australian citizens,” Mayor
Graham added.
“It’s a really big step for these individuals
so it would be great to see community support at the
ceremony in Wyong.”
