Scholarship
winners announced
Two students from Gorokan High School have been awarded
Wyong Shire Council scholarships as they embark on
their university careers.
Allan O’Connell and Grady O’Neill will
both receive $2,500 and an opportunity to work alongside
professional Council staff during university breaks.
Wyong Mayor, Warren Welham, will formally honour both
students at Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony.
“Council offers a Scholarship Program to HSC
students who successfully gain a placement at university
and who are studying in areas that have been identified
as skills shortages within local government and the
community,’’ Council’s Manager of
Workplace Strategies, Lyn Wheeler, said.
Allan will be studying Engineering and Grady will
be studying computer science.
Projects and mentors are being organised with Council’s
Shire and Corporate Services Departments for the two
scholarship winners.
“I would like to congratulate both students
on being awarded a Council scholarship and wish them
every success in their university studies,’’ Mayor
Welham said.
“Council looks forward to assisting them to
gain practical experience in their chosen fields of
study.’’
The target areas for the 2008 scholarship year were;
IT, Engineering, Town Planning/Environmental Health
and Teaching (Early Childhood).
The scholarships will be offered again for 2009 and
will also include Finance.
Applicants are required to include a 500 word essay
on what they hope to achieve by undertaking studies
at university, and how their particular field of study
and career choice can assist the community.
Students must be residents of Wyong Shire to apply
for scholarships; however, they can attend schools
outside the Shire.
At the conclusion of the scholarship, students have
the opportunity to progress to full traineeships with
Council.
Those wishing to apply for a 2009 scholarship are
required to have their applications in by the end of
the third school term this year.
Council will provide school principals and career
advisors with details of the scholarships and applications
forms by the end of Term One.
