Council
working with animal care groups
More and more stray dogs
are finding homes, thanks to a partnership between
Wyong Shire Council and animal care organisations.
Senior Keeper at Council’s Animal Care Facility
at Charmhaven, Garry Lockwood, said a relationship
had been established with Hunter Animal Rescue, the
Old Dogs Home, Cat Care and Dogs, Cats and Horses Animal
Adoptions to help find homes for animals which would
make appropriate pets.
“Finding suitable homes for animals can take
a lot of time, as different dogs have different requirements “
“Animal care organisations are helping Council
to shorten this time, thereby lessening the strain
on our facility and resources.” Mr Lockwood said.
“These organisations find temporary homes for
a large number of animals that are bought into the
facility until permanent homes can be found.
“They also have links with other animal care
organisations across the state, making it easier to
place dogs with suitable owners.” Mr Lockwood
added.
All the animals are de-sexed, immunised and micro-chipped
before going to a new home.
Residents are also urged to think carefully about
the budget, lifestyle and space requirements of owning
a dog before making any commitment. See information
to help with this decision or obtain details by

about Council's animal
care shelter at Charmhaven.
Since the partnership began 12 months ago, the animal
care organisations have collected about 25 cats and
dogs from Council’s facility each month.
Council does not attempt to find homes for animals
that are deemed to have behavioural problems; which
could pose a threat to other animals or humans; or
those with severe health problems.
