Our
leading citizens
A prominent community worker
has been named Wyong Shire’s Citizen of the Year.
Don Grace, who has volunteered countless hours of
his time to help people in need, received his honour
at last night’s Australia Day Award presentation.
In his second term at the helm of The Entrance Lions
Club and president of The Entrance North Progress Association,
Don (shown) works tirelessly and modestly for his community.
He was a driving force behind the Lions Sensory Garden,
which attracts thousands of visitors to The Entrance
North each year; is a member of The Entrance North
Coastcare and Wycare groups; a parish councillor of
the Anglican Church; and a supervisor of Work for The
Dole and Community Service Orders.
Announcing the award, Wyong Mayor, Bob Graham, said
Don Grace was a worthy recipient who “deserved
the highest acknowledgment for modestly giving his
time and services for the benefit of the community.”
The
Youth of the Year Award was won jointly by Steven Pokrajac,
Luke Schmatloch, Andrew Westerhof and Luke
Withers (right) , who are members of local band ‘Days
Unknown’.
The band is a popular attraction at Wyong Shire
Council’s Youth Week events. The Shire’s Environmental Award, was given posthumously
to the late Ken Cook. A former chair of the Ourimbah
Precinct Committee, Mr Cook was a well known community
activist and a driving force for the environment in
Wyong Shire.
Other winners included netballer Britta Shaw, who
was named Junior Sportsperson of the Year; athletics
stalwart Graham Kent who is the Shire’s Sportsperson
of the Year; and singer Jane Allen, from Northlakes
High School, who took out the Cultural Award.
