Australia Day 2004
Australia Day activities at The
Entrance have been designed to appeal to families.
There will be fun for all ages, with favourite ‘Aussie’
games such as sack races, gumboot throwing and egg and
spoon races. Other events certain to prove popular with
the youngsters will be the pie eating and the icecream
eating competitions.
The community celebration will be held at Memorial
Park, starting at 11.30am and finishing with a display
of fireworks at 9pm.
Music will be provided by the Tuggerah Lakes Showband
and ‘The Rock Bottoms’, as well as local
singers, Greg Gould and Chloe Abdilla. Bush poet, Garry
Lowe, will spin a few yarns from the Memorial Park stage.
Another popular attraction, the annual Tug-o-War Competition
will be serious stuff indeed, with the titleholders,
Masterfoods, attempting to beat all comers, including
a team from Maitland which always proves hard to beat.
The winner will collect $200 in prizemoney.
At 4.40pm, the flag-raising ceremony will take place,
followed by several speakers including Wyong Mayor,
Greg Best and the Shire’s Australia Day ambassador,
Bryce Courtenay.
The formal part of the day will be followed by a performance
from the band,’Touch of Old Australia’,
which includes Aboriginal dancers and an explanation
of traditional dance and musical instruments.
Other activites certain to draw big crowds will be
the exhibition by Hunter Valley Vintage Farm Machinery
members and blacksmith and woodturning displays. Vintage
farm machinery on show will be fully operational.
The ring of the anvil and the glow of the fire never
fails to attract interest in the demonstrations staged
by blacksmith, Graeme Askew. He displays the art of
forging while explaining how farm equipment was repaired
in days past.
Graeme’s display includes a range of hand-forged
tools and interesting farming equipment.
Australia Day 2004 at The Entrance will conclude with
a bumper fireworks display over Tuggerah Lakes.
