National
Aboriginal Indigenous Day of Observance Committee (NAIDOC)
Week
A leading community event, NAIDOC
Week, will be celebrated across Australia from July
8-15.
NAIDOC week is a way of celebrating and promoting
a greater understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples and their culture. This year's event
is particularly important because it is the 50th year
that NAIDOC Week has been held.
Communities across Australia come together to celebrate
the survival of Aboriginal peoples, the contribution
they have made to the nation; and the continuation
of Indigenous cultureThis year's national theme is
'50 years Looking Forward, Looking Blak'
Highlights of local NAIDOC Week celebrations will
be a series of community awards and a flag-raising
eventat 10am on July 9, outside the Civic Centre in
Hely Street, Wyong.
The ceremony will be followed by a bush tucker morning
tea, an introduction to the Darkinjung language and
the sharing of stories and personal experiences from
within local Indigenous communities.
